Hong Kong / Munich, 3rd. of October 2005 – Export orientated companies know: There are no prizes to be won in international business without good Eng-lish knowledge. It is therefore no surprise, that more and more companies, put their applicant’s language competence to the test, by using the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). A new Benchmarking-Initiative from TOEIC and Cleverlearn, adds another step in furthering their concept. It helps to determine the employees actual learning demand and responds accordingly with an individual personal training.
„For many companies English competence is a major key factor“, says Angelika Thormann, National Manager of TOEIC (www.toeic-deutschland.de) for Germany and Austria, in Berlin. „Together with Cleverlearn, it is our aim to support the Per-sonnel Management, in being able to assess and specifically further develop the lan-guage competency of applicants and employees.“ With their Benchmarking-Initiative TOEIC and Cleverlearn are addressing a huge further education problem. On the one hand, companies expect a successfully completed TOEIC certificate from their appli-cants, but on the other hand, a backlog exists for continual further English language devellopment amongst employees. It is not rare that course offers are uncoordinated and not justified for the individual learning demand. „Companies can not afford to neglect the language competence of their employees“, says Heinrich Pletschacher, European Country Manager from Cleverlearn in Munich.
In the future, when engaging new staff, Personnel Management should not only rely upon the standardarized certification procedure from TOEIC. Continual learning should be emphasized and used to enhance personnel development. Cleverlearn’s learning tools and their contents, provide valuable support. The major supplier of „English as a Foreign Language“ ( EFL) offers an Online-Tutorial for Euro 19,95 , which contains approximately 2000 test questions from TOEIC.
A further preparatoy method is CleverTrainer, a digital learning aid , which can be downloaded , free of charge ,onto so called waistcoat computers (PDA), like Pocket PC or Palm .These methods, offer employees specific preparation for TOEIC. With their Benchmarking-Initiative TOEIC and Cleverlearn continue their partnership. In order to promote their concept in particular in HR circles ,a joint trade fair presenta-tion is schedueled. „ In view of Globalization language competence shifts to the top of the priority list“, states Heinrich Pletschacher.„ More and more companies are be-ginning to understand the message .“
Re TOEIC
The test of English for International Communication (TOEIC®) assesses on hand of a Multiple-Choice-Questionaire the capabilities of non english speaking people, in their daily work situations or in areas where international communication capabilities are required. The test determines the candidate’s spoken, written, reading and general understanding of the English language. TOEIC was set up in 1979 , upon a sugges-tion from the Japanese Ministry for Industry and Foreign Trade (MITI). The test was designed in the USA from the centre for Psychometry ETS (Educational Testing Ser-vice). The quality and reliability of the tests issued by the ETS, including TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language), GMAT® (Graduate Management Admini-stration Test), SAT® (Student Admission Test) as well as numerous other university entry admission tests and examinations for career qualifications are internationally highly recommended. The standardized TOEIC, supplies every user, with the same re-liable results and serves in assessing candidates of all knowledge levels (Beginners to Advanced Levels), as well as all professions and a wide section of the population.
